American Dining in Middlebury
A&W Family Restaurant (802) 388-2876, Rte 7 S, Middlebury, VT 05753
One of the last real drive-in restaurants in Vermont (and probably America), a meal at A & W should be required for graduation. While roller skates have been replaced by roller blades, the curly fries and the root beer floats haven't changed a bit. Open from early May through mid-September, middkids have few opportunities to stop at A & W. During the summer, Wednesday is classic car night.
American Flatbread (802) 388-3300 137 Maple Street, Middlebury, VT 05753
They call it “flatbread,” but it is close enough to pizza and this restaurant is definitely one of Middlebury’s best pizza joints. The place’s setting is comfortable and airy as the restaurant is very wide open and features towering ceilings. The wood-fired oven cooks and smokes the ever-so creatively topped and seasoned flatbreads to perfection. There are great choices of flatbreads that appeal to both the carnivore and herbivore in everyone. On either side of the entrée, Flatbread has one of Middlebury’s finest salads and some of the most enjoyable desserts. It’s only open on Friday and Saturdays, though, so make sure you go when it’s open!
Bobcat Cafe (802) 453-3311, 5 Main Street, Bristol, VT 05443
Explore neighboring Bristol and especially this charming and awsome combination of restaurant, pub, and music hall. Sit down for a nice dinner for two, or go during one of their many live concerts and enjoy a wonderful sandwich from their diverse sandwich menu. You'll be guaranteed good food, a friendly enviroment, and hopefully even better local music!
Fire and Ice (802) 388-7166, 26 Seymour Street Middlebury, VT 05753
With the unfortunate demise of the Dog Team Tavern, Fire & Ice now represents one of the longest standing restaurants in Middlebury, not to mention one of its finer dining joints.they feature a thick and hearty clam chowder and all of the entrees are large enough to feed two. The best part of the restaurant may be their never-ending salad bar, which offers anything from salad to sushi to shrimp cocktail. The restaurant also has a very cool interior with decorations ranging from Middlebury Campus front pages from the early 20th century to a large wooden motor boat chich doubles as a part of the salad bar. Also, check out the Big Moose Pub for a great night at the bar and delicious and walet-friendly pub menu.
Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op (802) 388-7276, 1 Washington Street, Middlebury, VT 05753
The name says it all. At the Co-op you are going to get a sandwich with freshly baked bread, crisp and organic vegetables and fine deli meats. Naturally, there is a wide array of fresh salads to choose from. Throw in a large selection of organic drinks, and you've got yourself all the components for a darn good meal. This place is extremely popular for the vegetarian and vegetarian inclined students, but meat-eaters can also find plenty to chew on here.
Mr. Up's (802) 388-6725 25 Bakery Lane, Middlebury, VT 05753
Beyond their popular Wednesday night revelry that most seniors and juniors can enjoy, Mr. Ups does not offer too much to write home about. Stick with the American staples—their Hamburgers, chicken wings, steaks etc. are all tasty enough and the Thai Peanut Chicken Wrap is yummy too. They do have an endless salad and bread bar and their deck overlooking the Otter Creek is a nice spot to sit in the warm weather.
Noonie's Deli (802) 388-0014
Noonie's is the popular choice for Middlebury Students as Middlebury’s best deli. The Purple Passion, a giant of a sandwich with turkey, avocado and cheese is not to be passed up. Just by witnessing the sheer magnitude of your sandwich, you know that you’re getting your money’s worth. However, the freshest meats, daily baked bread and crisp vegetables come together to create Middlebury’s ultimate sandwich.
Swift House Inn & Restaurant (802) 388-9925, 25 Stewart Lane, Middlebury, VT 05753
It’s a great place for a fancier dinner so try to convince the parents to bring you when they stop by Middlebury. Their appetizers are fantastic and often feature many local cheeses and vegetables. The flat-iron steak I ate there was the best steak I’ve had in Middlebury. The dining experience is completed with the extremely quaint and tasteful decorations because you are likely eating in the library or parlor of this beautiful, old Vermont B & B.
