Do not take this course if you wish to learn music theory. Hamlin is a nice guy, but horrible at teaching basic theory. Just buy a drum and harmonica on your own and save the tuition money.

Professor Hamlin is one of the nicest professors I have encountered at Middldebury. He is quirky and likes telling ridiculous jokes. That said, he doesn't convey his passion for music in the least in this course. I detested the music software we had to complete. Though I hardly studied for tests, this software program was challenging. In short, I think whether you'd be okay spending hours in front of a computer screen tapping on the keyboard as if you were playing a piano depends on whether you have had previous musical experience, i.e. played an instrument or learnt music theory. If you, you will rip your hair out, if you haven't, you may find it useful. This class is an easy A, and will get you a very (very) basic knowledge of music theory.

Hamlin was cool. first year music is ninevitably boring, but he makes it somewhat interesting with his piano and upright bass playing...

Hamlin completely inspired me. His enthusiasm for music was infectious. I came to class excited because he was excited and found myself very interested in the material. At times, it was too easy and I felt it could have moved faster. If you know nothing about music, don't be afraid to take this class because it assumes no previous knowledge. If you do know a bit about music, you might be bored in the class and should consider taking the next level. Class is also a lot of fun - we learn a bit of harmonica and drumming. For the musical beginner, I would absolutely recommend this class.
