Do not take this course if you wish to learn music theory. Hamlin is a nice guy, but horrible at teaching basic theory. Just buy a drum and harmonica on your own and save the tuition money.

Professor Hamlin is one of the nicest professors I have encountered at Middldebury. He is quirky and likes telling ridiculous jokes. That said, he doesn't convey his passion for music in the least in this course. I detested the music software we had to complete. Though I hardly studied for tests, this software program was challenging. In short, I think whether you'd be okay spending hours in front of a computer screen tapping on the keyboard as if you were playing a piano depends on whether you have had previous musical experience, i.e. played an instrument or learnt music theory. If you, you will rip your hair out, if you haven't, you may find it useful. This class is an easy A, and will get you a very (very) basic knowledge of music theory.

Hamlin was cool. first year music is ninevitably boring, but he makes it somewhat interesting with his piano and upright bass playing...

Hamlin completely inspired me. His enthusiasm for music was infectious.
I came to class excited because he was excited and found myself very
interested in the material.
At times, it was too easy and I felt it could have moved faster. If you know
nothing about music, don't be afraid to take this class because it assumes no
previous knowledge. If you do know a bit about music, you might be bored in
the class and should consider taking the next level.
Class is also a lot of fun - we learn a bit of harmonica and drumming.
For the musical beginner, I would absolutely recommend this class.

I love Peter Hamlin. He is wonderful and appreciates nothing more than your involvement in the material.

Fundamental music theory is destined to be easy and boring. Professor Hamlin makes the class a little bit interesting with his humor. If you study the text books carefully, even you have no previous knowledge, you will find some lectures boring. Some kids are just lazy to study the text book carefully and raise one stupid question after another to take up the class time. Hamlin is too nice to ignore these stupid questions and answer them privately after class.

Hamlin is an awesome guy. His passion for music is so obvious in his teaching. I knew more theory than I thought coming into class, so the actual material was very easy. I did hardly any work outside of class. However, the class atmosphere was so fun I went to every one. I mean, we jam, we sing, we listen to music: this is no ordinary class. I would say though that the course moves quickly if you don't know how to read music or have previous knowledge, so the time commitment will totally vary person by person. Hamlin is really fair with grading too. He wants everyone to get an A and tries hard to have that be the case. I'd definitely recommend this course, it was just so fun.

Such a fun and laid back class, especially if you have any knowledge of theory at all. Peter Hamlin is absolutely hysterical and makes basic music theory so fun and interesting. Definitely take this class with him!
